If there’s one word that sums up the perpetual debate about violence in videogames, it’s “predictable”.

The last few months have seen politicians and press in the UK get themselves all in a tizzy once more with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and its now infamous ‘No Russian’ level. Elsewhere, censors in Australia have forced Valve to release an edited version of Left 4 Dead 2, after the game was refused classification in its uncut form, and have banned Rebellion’s forthcoming Alien Versus Predator game outright. But amidst all the controversy, the cut and thrust of the debate has remained constant: ill-informed criticism from mainstream commentators and knee-jerk, reactionary defence from both gamers and the majority of specialist writers.

All in a Tizzy

Modern Warfare 2: masterpiece or moral panic?

Most rational people will agree that censorship is ultimately undesirable. It curtails personal freedoms and limits artistic expression. Informed adults should be free to decide for themselves whether content – be it music, film, art, literature or videogames – falls within their own threshold of acceptability, without the intervention of regulatory bodies or the state. This approach has worked well in the UK in recent years with the relatively progressive attitude of the BBFC and government backing for the PEGI system of classification. With a small number of exceptions, most titles featuring ‘mature’ content now make it to shop shelves in the UK in their original form, unscathed by censorship.

However, most mainstream criticism of gratuitous violence in videogames sidesteps this well-reasoned argument by claiming that games like Modern Warfare 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 pose a real danger to impressionable children. That mature titles are unsuitable for children and young teenagers is hardly open to debate; minors should not be exposed to exceptionally violent content without a framework of knowledge and maturity allowing them to place it in the correct cultural and social context. Indeed, the UK’s current rating system prevents under 18s from purchasing titles like Modern Warfare 2 while allowing adults unrestricted access to the game in its original form. All too frequently, those wishing to restrict the availability of violent games fail to realise that a system is already in place to do just that.

(Im)Mature

Shadow of the Colossus: entrails not included

Unfortunately, rebuttal from the specialist press and from gamers themselves tends to be equally myopic. While a few veteran games journalists have offered alternative viewpoints on why content like Modern Warfare 2′s ‘No Russian’ level is deplorable without resorting to the tired “virtual violence is bad/our right as informed adults” dichotomy, the majority of articles and comments threads on the subject simply repeat variations on well-worn counter-arguments. The censors are out of touch. The detractors don’t understand the medium. No link between videogame gore and violent real-world behaviour has been definitively established. Violence in games actually helps to relieve stress rather than cause anti-social impulses. While many of these points are certainly valid, rarely do commentators take an introspective look at the games industry and the established conventions of ‘mature’ gaming.

It’s important to note that ‘mature’ content in videogames is rarely analogous to the same concept in film or literature. In games, the term is synonymous with violence, gore and, increasingly, nudity. It’s ironic that titles which feature blood and boobs amongst their main selling points are considered mature while ‘torture porn’ movies like Saw and Hostel are considered crass, unsophisticated and, frankly, infantile. Films have proved that stories for adult audiences can be recounted without resorting to gratuitous sex and violence and be all the better for it thanks to the power of suggestion. But too many games revel in tawdry bloodshed and the empty titillation of pixelated breasts. Certainly games are capable of transcending these stereotypes: Half-Life, Shadow of the Colossus, Deus Ex, Bioshock and Portal have all offered mature, well-rounded experiences without bathing the player in blood. At the same time one must concede that undoubtedly there are games, just as there are films, in which violence and horror actually enhance the experience by provoking shock or an extra level of visceral feedback. There is a place for violence in games but please, let’s use it with discretion as a veteran film director would, not gratuitously. Is a little self-censorship too much to ask of the games industry?

Less is More?

Dragon Age: Origin’s ‘Persistent Gore’

In all probability, yes. Unlike film, gaming is still a relatively young medium and the language and conventions of games development are not yet firmly established. However, many gamers in their late teens and early twenties have come to understand the concept of ‘mature’ gaming as being synonymous with gratuitous violence and many companies are happy to tailor content to the perceived expectations of this core demographic. Bioware’s dreadful promotional videos for Dragon Age: Origins and the game’s frankly ridiculous ‘Persistent Gore’ graphic option is one of the worst examples of a developer attempting to tap this “blood and boobs” zeitgeist for sales. It’s crass and tasteless and adds nothing to an otherwise exceptional game.

And yet a few companies have taken novel approaches to dealing with in-game violence. Fallout 3, an unrepentantly bloody title, theoretically allows the player to kill any character in the game world, with the exception of children. However, choosing to do so will prevent the main character from completing quests, accessing city areas and buying ammunition and medical supplies crucial to survival. Alexander Gambotto-Burke’s brilliant Natural Born Killer article describes the author’s attempt to play through Fallout 3 by killing everything in sight. After the initial thrill of total freedom wares off, he soon finds the game an empty, bleak and meaningless experience when approached this way. Other recent titles have given the player opt-outs from some of the worst moments – Tim Schafer’s Brutal Legend asks the player to choose whether they would prefer swearing and gore to be enabled at the beginning of the game and allows them to be toggled on or off from the Options menu at any time. Even Modern Warfare 2 allows squeamish players to skip ‘No Russian’ if they so wish.

It’s unlikely that videogames in general will become less violent any time soon. A slew of upcoming titles – Sega’s Bayonetta, with it’s over-sexed heroine, Sony’s God of War III and Capcom’s Dead Rising 2 – seem to confirm this prediction. But as the industry evolves, it would be nice to see an increasing number of developers and publishers adapt a third way and use violence selectively rather than ubiquitously. Just as in film, there will always be niche titles in which extreme gore is the main attraction but as audiences become older and more sophisticated, companies would do well to reassess just what ‘mature’ means in the context of interactive entertainment.

The old Smoke and Mirrors site is currently migrating hosting and will be out of commission for a few weeks. Hopefully it will be back up and running on all new hardware in early December. In the meantime, I’ve set up a new temporary Smoke and Mirrors site to keep me ticking over for the next little while. I’ll also be copying over a few older posts for the benefit of anyone curious about my previous work.

Hopefully this arrangement will only be for the next few weeks, as planned, and I’ll be seeing you at an all new site soon enough!

When: 8 – 31 August (not 18 and 25)
How Much: £7.50 – £8.50

In 140 characters or less: “Doc Brown introduces a mish-mash of up-and-coming comedians. Be warned – quality varies considerably.”

In theory, The Comedy Reserve is a great idea. Three up-and-coming comedians share an hour-long show with a respected, but still relatively unknown comic performing compere duties. In practice, however, it’s something altogether less than the sum of its parts. Doc Brown, London-based rapper turned stand-up and brother to author Zadie Smith, certainly performs the role of MC to the height of his considerable abilities adding such much needed cohesiveness to a bill of comedians, each with an entirely different concept of humour.

Jared Hardy is barely on stage before launching into an exceptionally self-deprecating routine which, try as it might, can’t quite recover after the audience loses confidence early on. Hardy claims to resemble “an emo Harry Potter” but with his slight West Country lilt, painfully scrawny frame and the admission that he hails from Bristol, the character Sid from Skins is perhaps a more appropriate comparison. Like his small-screen counterpart, Hardy appears agonisingly awkward and, while endearing in some small way, seems out of his depth in front of an Edinburgh crowd.

Canadian comic Pat Burtscher (or “Pat Butcher!” as a lady in the next seat squealed with delight), by contrast, seems exceptionally sure of himself though appears entirely unaware of the fact. Whether drug-induced or otherwise, Burtscher spends the early part of his short set in a stupor, only snapping out of it to battle an errant mic stand. By the time he finally manages to attain something vaguely resembling lucidity, he’s riffing off the sexual differences between men and women, ending in an outrageous – and excruciating – masturbation gag. Burtscher is certainly an intense performer but his dozey demeanour and crass payoffs are something of a let-down.

Final act Chris Stokes is a minor revelation after the previous two comics. Like Hardy, Stokes plays on themes of personal deprecation and poor esteem but possesses just enough self-assurance to pull it off. He is a deconstructivist, playing on social misconceptions and dismantling them on stage. The pace is slow and meandering but there’s a surrealistic element that acts as a smoke screen, keeping the audience distracted while Stokes weaves additional layers into the fabric of a sometimes thin initial joke. His personal life proves a rich source of material, as tales of his veganism and of living with his flatmate are used as springboards for introducing new concepts. It’s difficult to see a relatively offbeat act like Chris Stokes truly going mainstream but the comedian can certainly expect to attract a cult following if this performance is any indication.

There are undoubtedly laughs to be had at The Comedy Reserve but with Doc Brown confined to his role as Master of Ceremonies, it’s left to Chris Stokes to lift the show above the level set by Hardy and Burtscher. As it is, he can’t quite manage it single-handedly and his complex, deadpan routine may prove something of a turnoff for many. Was the ticket price for The Comedy Reserve a couple of pounds cheaper it might seem a more reasonable prospect but as it is, it’s hard not to come away with at least a slight sense of disappointment.

What: The Early Edition (Marcus Brigstocke and Andre Vincent)
Where: Udderbelly
When: 12.25pm daily until 30 August
How Much: £10 – £12.50.

In 140 characters or less: “Brigstocke, Vincent and guests bring TV panel show to life with mixed results.”

The panel show has become ubiquitous on television over the last few years as Mock the Week and 8 Out of 10 Cats have blurred the line between news and comedy with sharp writing, carefully calculated gags and slick production. It’s a compelling, if formulaic, approach to TV comedy, which, with a little bit of editorial magic, gives the impression of a thirty minute barrage of constant gags. It’s jarring then, to see the format transplanted directly into a live environment, warts and all.

The Early Edition, the live descendant of Marcus Brigstocke and Andre Vincent’s irreverent television panel show The Late Edition, sticks to much the same format as it has in previous years at the Fringe. Brigstocke and Vincent, along with a pair of panel guests, dissect the day’s newspapers (“and the Daily Mail”) in front of a live audience. Save a few staple gags, the show is almost entirely improvised and audience participation is actively encouraged. Inevitably, overall quality varies somewhat depending on how brisk the day’s news is and on how successfully the guest stars interact with the hosts.

Of the two stalwarts, Marcus Brigstocke essentially acts as anchorman. Not only does he keep the show roughly on track, he facilitates most of the exchanges between audience and performers and leads with some of the juiciest news stories. As ever, he’s biting and sarcastic though rarely strays too close to controversy. Andre Vincent, on the other hand, is brash and loud and careers headlong into delicate topics with all the subtlety of an enraged wildebeast. In spite, or perhaps because of, this however, Vincent is the only panel member to really step away from safe material and take risks. His wonderfully tasteless one-liners about 9/11 and basement-dwelling Austrian families may get a few groans but they’re certainly memorable.

Though nominally appearing as a panel guest on The Early Edition, Carrie Quinlan has been a regular on the show since it first ran in Edinburgh in 2007 and is by now as much a headline name as either Brigstocke or Vincent. Quinlan tends to gravitate towards softer stories and offsets some of Vincent’s bluster and Brigstocke’s acerbic wit though her brand of humour is no less incisive, despite the material she chooses to work with. The second guest slot rotates daily and has been filled by such luminaries as Phil Jupitus, Stewart Lee and Ed Byrne in the past. On the day Festbuzz popped along to the show, American comedian Jamie Kilstein was sitting in on the panel.

Back home Kilstein has cultivated a certain level of infamy as a biting left-wing comic, loudly touting his atheism and veganism as well as radical political polemics. Despite his firebrand reputation, however, Kilstein is surprisingly tame. His rebuttal to the right-wing savaging of the NHS in the American press is certainly timely but lacks real bite. Otherwise, he plays it safe sticking to tried-and-tested routines about the Bush Administration, US insularity… nothing we haven’t heard before a dozen times over.Kilstein is clearly capable of much greater things, begging the question of why he chooses to regurgitate the same kind of lowest common denominator political material that has seen both Janeane Garofalo and Rich Hall take a beating from the critics this year.

While The Early Edition is certainly an entertaining way to spend a lunchtime, it remains too closely tied to the television panel show format. At an hour, it feels overly long, as if attempting to justify the cost of admission. While the show picks up towards the end, the middle seems flabby and lacking in structure. With the absence of an editor, the cracks in the format really begin to show in a live environment and the audience is left at something of a loose end. Though The Early Edition is certainly worth checking out, it seems that Brigstocke and Vincent may need to rework the format before bringing it back for another run in 2010.

Who: Dylan Moran
Where: Playhouse
When: Mon 10 and Tues 11 August
How Much: £20

In 140 characters or less: “Dylan Moran: a slightly unhinged genius walking the fine line between madness and comic brilliance.”

After nearly a year and a half on the road in support of his latest show, What It Is, Dylan Moran finally returns to his adopted hometown of Edinburgh for a two-night stand at the Playhouse at the height of the Festival. Yet anticipation and excitement are tempered by apprehension after a slew of mixed reviews for the current tour. The Irishman has recently been accused of looking disinterested on stage, disconnected from his audience, of giving the impression that gigs are an ordeal to be endured, a tiresome distraction between glasses of wine.

Not so tonight. Whether invigorated by the energy of a hometown crowd or simply feeding off the buzz of the city during the Fringe, Moran is electric. Eloquent, intense and engaging, he seizes on audience cues and improvises freely. A cough, a heckle, the sight of cameraphone set him off on meandering tangents. The ad-libbed sections never feel out of place though he sheepishly confesses to losing track of the script on more than one occasion.

As ever, Moran’s stage persona is an amalgam of Bernard Black, his celebrated Black Books character, and a disillusioned existentialist philosopher, neatly pickled in wine. Rather than relying on jokes and punchlines, the Irishman blends the mundane with the surreal, his astute observations balanced by wonderfully absurd mixed metaphors and witty wordplay. And while his yarns rarely hold up well to re-telling, every so often a single phrase reduces the audience to tears of laughter.

Nowhere is his subtle brand of humour better showcased than his Scottish-themed material, apparently written specially for the brace of Edinburgh shows. He gently probes the rivalry between the capital and Glasgow. However, rather than falling back on the Glaswegian stereotype perpetuated by the likes of Frankie Boyle, Moran instead celebrates the virtues of the West Coast city before coyly informing the audience that, “The difference between Glasgow and Edinburgh is, well, Edinburgh is like the beginning of a wedding. Glasgow is what’s left afterwards.”

Moran is well capable of holding his own against other performers when it comes to politics, science and other staple topics but is at his best when dealing with more human issues – pleasure, pain, life, death, love, sex – and lifting the veil on his personal life. His comic threads are spun from whimsy and anecdote and weave a colourful tapestry that exposes the deeply-buried, and often hilarious, truths about human relationships and behaviour.

Yet for all his post-modern, deconstructivist bluster, Moran’s rambling tales are ultimately life-affirming, underpinned by a genuine warmth and a sense that, in spite of all else, love, family and guilty pleasures are at the heart of what makes us human and are to be cherished. While the main set peters out rather than coming to a satisfactory conclusion, a superb encore more than makes amends for any shortcomings. In a show lasting an hour and a half – half as long again as the standard What It Is set – Dylan Moran is a constant delight, a slightly unhinged genius walking the fine line between madness and comic brilliance.

In 140 characters or less: “Canadian comic Phil Nichol turns manic lounge singer. Cash meets Sinatra is a storm of tequila, swearing and song.”

Musical comedy is all the rage in Edinburgh this year. Since David O’Doherty took last year’s If.comedy award at the Fringe for Let’s Comedy, his whimsical collection of oddball songs, tapped out on a tiny keyboard, other performers have re-invented themselves as all-singing (and, more rarely, all dancing) comedy acts. The Irishman is a tough act to follow though. The last few years have seen the bar for tune-based comedy raised to dizzying new heights as comics like Bill Bailey and Doc Brown have pushed the medium far beyond the boundaries of bawdy three-chord singalongs and trite lyrical parodies.

Enter Phil Nichol. The Canadian comedian, a former member of comedy songster trio Corky and the Juice Pigs, has abandoned his now familiar stand-up routine in favour of an outrageous over-the-top musical show at this year’s Fringe. A Deadpan Poet Sings Quiet Songs Quietly sees Nichol take to the stage with slicked-back hair, a wide grin and a dapper suit, acoustic guitar hanging from his shoulder; think Johnny Cash meets Frank Sinatra after a few tequilas too many. He’s accompanied by a jazz pianist and a double bass player who add a carefully calculated air of pretentiousness to the proceedings, together with their finely-honed chops and backing vocals.

Despite the change in format, Nichol’s trademark deadpan humour has survived the transition to musical comedy fully intact. He’s witty and cutting, with absolutely impeccable delivery, as unexpected lyrical twists leave the audience writhing in mirth. The songs themselves form the backbone of the show and direct audience interaction, while not entirely absent, is kept to a minimum. Nichol remains in character throughout, a brooding, cynical veteran of a thousand lounge performances, determined to inflict his misery upon the world. The subject matter ranges from darkly comic personal diatribes to surprisingly incisive criticisms of PC culture, all held together by the performer’s infectious intensity and ludicrously foul mouth.

Gaps between songs are bridged with loosely-themed collections of short, sharp one-liners which act as a prelude for Nichol’s next irreverent slice of poetry. If the quips seem hit and miss, the effect is surely deliberate. Razor-sharp witticisms induce genuine belly-laughs while some of the more low-brow material elicits unsympathetic moans just as heartfelt. Nichol, however, seems to thrive on the cheesiness of some of the more ropey gags. “A groan is as good as a laugh to me!” he gleefully informs the audience after an especially hammy pun.

It’s clear that Nichol hasn’t quite ironed out all the creases in A Deadpan Poet… but the show is brimming with comic potential. The songs that make up the middle section lack the intensity and imagination of the opening and closing salvos and, despite the intended ironic uncouthness, too many of the one-liners are devoid of the sophistication an Edinburgh audience demands. Thankfully, however, the show’s ending and Nichol’s exhilarating stage presence more than compensate for any shortcomings in the rest of the material.

For a performer who has been away from the musical comedy scene for so long – the Fringe is A Deadpan Poet’s first outing in front of a live audience – Phil Nichol acquits himself admirably and, with a bit of spit and polish as the festival goes on, his latest show could easily become one of the highlights of the Fringe.

Rockstars aren’t known for having a firm grasp of mathematics. Perhaps that’s why, every now and then, one of the simple equations of music fails to balance: to get a bigger sound, you need more musicians, right?

Wrong. Over the last few years, a succession of two-piece acts, from Rhode Island’s Lightning Bolt to venerable Norwegian black metal crust punks (no, really) Darkthrone, have defied convention to prove that a drumkit and a single guitar can make all the noise you’ll ever need.

Bronto Skylift, Glasgow’s own two-pronged noisemongers, are reluctant to shed light on the eldritch mysteries surrounding how such a small ensemble manages to create such a huge racket. “We could never reveal our secrets!” laughs guitarist and vocalist Niall Strachan. “I think it’s a combination of Iain hitting the drums really hard and me hitting my guitar really hard and brushing our teeth three times a day!”

Originally hailing from the north – Strachan is from Inverness while drummer Iain Stewart has roots in Orkney – Bronto Skylift formed in Glasgow in early 2007, quickly earning a reputation as energetic live perfomers. Though the band originally featured a bassist, three soon became two, and Strachan and Stewart have carried on as a duo ever since.

The Bronto Skylift sound is difficult to pinpoint, but there’s nothing wrong with that, the band say. “The music maybe sounds familiar,” says Strachan, sagely, “but at the same time you can’t put your finger on it.”

Falling somewhere in the nexus between grunge, sludge and noise rock, Bronto’s songs are laden with driving, jagged riffs with plenty of opportunity for Stewart to demonstrate his virtuoso drumming skills. A comparison with Lightning Bolt is certainly valid, though Bronto’s brand of noise is perhaps a little less chaotic and a bit more focused.

Like a few of UtR’s recent favourites, including Hey Vampires and The Whisky Works, Bronto Skylift are full of praise for Glasgow’s emerging punk and grunge scene. “There’s a great community of bands at the moment, giving each other help and support but all ploughing their own paths,” enthuses Strachan, who also acknowledges a musical sea-change in a city previously dominated by indie and acoustic acts. “There seems to be a move away from the twee stuff going about the past few years towards a heavier, more crunchy type of music,” he muses.

Summer 2009 is set to be very busy indeed for Bronto Skylift. As well as landing a prestigious Saturday night slot on the T Break stage at T in the Park, the guys will also play at the Wickerman Festival in Dumfries at the end of July and have a spate of other shows lined up across Scotland. They’re also recording new material when the opportunity arises and may just be seeking a label to release it on in the near future.

Proving once again that maths and music make for uneasy bedfellows, Bronto Skylift are definitely more than the sum of their parts.

Intrigued? Catch Bronto Skylift live at the following dates:

It’s a brave soul who goes against the grain and speaks out against the indie-centric press coverage of Scotland’s music scene, but Iain Bethel, lead singer and bassist of Glaswegian four-piece post-hardcore outfit The Whisky Works, is not a man to mince words.

“I think if you dig deep, there’s a lot of great stuff going on in the Scottish music scene,” he says. “It’s become a lot better in the last few years, it has gone from being very formulaic to a lot more dynamic. Personally, I think Scotland’s music scene could do a lot better from promoting less singer-songwriter types, I really don’t think we need any more of them!”

Fighting words, perhaps, but his broadside will get many nods of agreement from those who have seen the alternative scene in Glasgow go stratospheric over the last couple of years while the taste-makers have looked on, oblivious. Then again, one would expect nothing less than polemics from a band quietly confident that they can “tear a new one in the UK music scene” with their upcoming mini-album Deficit Attention Program, due for release in August, and a summer tour which will see them travel the length of Britain from Elgin to Somerset.

Listening to tracks from the forthcoming EP, it’s easy to believe The Whisky Works can do just that. Driving rock songs like ‘Electric’ are deceptively melodic, while the rhythm section is rock solid, laying down a tailor-made base for Bethel’s impressive vocals.

The band draws influences from post-hardcore staples like At The Drive-In, Cave In and Rival Schools, as well as more eclectic acts like the late, great Aereogramme. But despite such a firm sonic grounding in the genre heavyweights, Bethel is adamant The Whisky Works’ sound, and especially their live show, has its own character.

“We thrive on creating a great sense of energy both through our recordings and our live show, which we feel is something a lot of bands overlook,” he enthuses. “Without trying to sound clichéd, what we believe we are doing is our own thing, we are not imitating anyone or trying to sound like our favourite bands, we just do what feels natural for the four of us.”

The Whisky Works have been lucky enough to have had Iain Cook – of aforementioned Glasgow post-rock demigods Aereogramme – behind the desk for the recording of Deficit Attention Program. The band can’t speak highly enough of Cook and believe his input was invaluable in the creation of the mini-album. Bethel explains; “Working with Iain Cook has been incredible! I honestly don’t think you could ever meet a nicer man. Aside from the fact he is really great at what he does, he also gave us a large amount of control over the mix.”

So where next for The Whisky Works? Their upcoming tour and EP will likely keep them busy for some time but, looking ahead, the band sees the next 12 months as a real make-or-break period. The guys hope to build on their existing fanbase, establish themselves as a nationwide presence and make sure their new record gets the respect and recognition it deserves.

Whether that will be enough to make those looking for the next breakout indie act sit up and pay attention to the post-hardcore scene remains to be seen, but on the strength of Deficit Attention Program, we wouldn’t bet against it.

Jodi Mullen returns with the second installment of his introductory guide to the more extreme forms of rock music in Scotland, from folk/battle to drone/doom, with a few choice recommendations thrown in.

Warning: if you think Muse are too ‘rawk’, you may want to go away until normal indie-centric programming is resumed tomorrow. Feeling brave? Read on…

Somehow, in spite of all the apathy and adversity, metal in Scotland has not only survived and endured, it has thrived. Each of our major cities has a rich and vibrant metal underground, focused around a handful of venues and extremely dedicated fan communities. Glasgow is the undisputed jewel in Scottish metal’s spiked crown, being the home of perhaps our most successful metal act, Man Must Die (more below) and a regular stop-over for the metal world’s biggest touring acts. The city is also home to bands that span the full spectrum of subgenres: death metallers Madman is Absolute, folk/battle metal outfit Alba Gu Brath and black metal titans Daemonolith are just a few acts out of dozens.

As well as a plethora of rock and metal bars, Glasgow plays host to a number of small to medium-sized venues that specialise in the most extreme forms of music. Ivory Blacks, The Cathouse, Captain’s Rest and Maggie May’s form the backbone of the city’s gigging circuit for metal acts, though many more venues feature prominently too.

The metal scene in Edinburgh perhaps isn’t quite as vibrant, particularly with the announcement last month that popular rock and metal club Studio 24 was set to lose its license. Bannerman’s remains a favourite for extreme acts and regularly hosts shows with some of the most interesting and varied lineups around. While the capital may not have quite the same number of metal bands as Glasgow, it is home to some of the more eclectic bands in the Scottish underground, including drone/doom instrumental act Jackal-Headed Guard of the Dead.

Proving perhaps that there is something about the frozen north that brings out the metal spirit, Aberdeen has one of Scotland’s longest established scenes, with venues like The Moorings becoming institutions in their own right alongside the likes of Moshulu and The Tunnels. Local favourites Black Atom seem to have been on the verge of becoming the next big thing for well over half a decade while death metal outfit Bonesaw are one of the country’s most brutal acts. Meanwhile, Ascension, one of Scotland’s finest power metal acts split their time between Aberdeen and Glasgow.

Outside the big three cities, smaller scenes exist in Dundee – home to traditional metallers Swordmaster – Perth and Inverness with various other acts coming from small towns all over the country, including What The Blood Revealed, a post-metal act who call Irvine, Ayrshire their home.

Over the next few months, Under the Radar will be examining Scotland’s emerging metal scene in detail, starting out with a look at the country’s ferocious death metal community next month. In the meantime though, we introduce two of the very best homegrown acts who are currently flying the flag for Scottish metal around Europe…

Alestorm

With the release of their second album, Black Sails at Midnight, Perth’s Alestorm look set to become the latest Scottish act to make it big on the international metal scene. Branding themselves “True Scottish Pirate Metal”, the four-piece play upbeat, traditional heavy metal with strong influences from the worlds of power metal and folk music. Alestorm revel in their ludicrously over-the-top buccaneer image; band members take to the stage dressed as pirates and song titles like ‘Wenches and Mead’ and ‘Keelhauled’ are the order of the day, though a reworking of ‘Flower of Scotland’ has been known to creep onto live setlists every now and then. Signed to Austrian independent metal label Napalm Records, Alestorm will join legendary Finnish folk-metallers Korpiklaani on the Paganfest tour of Europe this autumn.

Man Must Die

Four young men from Glasgow with a penchant for loud noise and violence? Who would have thought it? Man Must Die’s star has been in the ascendancy for several years now, during which time the band has landed much coveted support slots with the likes of Kataklysm and Aborted but forthcoming album No Tolerance For Imperfection will hopefully see them becoming one of death metal’s leading lights in their own right. Driven by crushing riffs, Man Must Die’s brand of death metal is unrelentingly brutal and aggressive and frequently delves into the kind of grisly lyrical subject matter for which the genre has become infamous. Matters of taste aside though, one can’t help but admire some of the virtuoso musicianship on display as the band push their instruments and themselves to new heights of extremity.
